Endoscopic Surgery

Spine Surgery:

Spinal surgery is recommended for patients with aggravating symptoms despite undergoing medical or physical treatments. The most common indications for spine surgery are:

  • Unable to walk/stand/ sit for sufficient duration or affects daily living/activity
  • Weakness of limb
  • Loss of urine control

If the patient has severe excruciating pain, that does not mean he/she needs emergent surgery. The pain will subside with bed rest, analgesics and muscle relaxants. Tingling and numbness will reduce with medicines. A patient can have 2 types of presentations– Central canal stenosis and lateral canal stenosis Claudication or inability to walk for a distance is the hallmark of central canal stenosis along with back pain. Leg pain (sciatica), tingling, numbness – or radicular symptoms are the hallmark of lateral recess stenosis. If medical and conservative management does not relieve pressure or swelling over 6-8 weeks of treatment, it is unlikely to further conservative management will help. In such cases, surgery is indicated. The goal of any spine surgery is to release the pressure exerted on the spinal column and relax the spinal nerves or cord. All spinal surgeries are performed by our spine specialist in  Mumbai using a specialised minimally-invasive surgery (MIS) tool known as ‘Tubular surgery’ or ‘Endoscopic spine surgery’.

Endoscopic Spine Surgery

Endoscopic Surgery:

Endoscopic surgery is an MIS technique which is used to examine and treat internal organs via small incisions that heal faster. This procedure can be customised in several ways to treat any specific organ in its place such that the adjacent muscles and tissues are harmed. The two primary tools of this surgery are:

Endoscope:

An endoscope is a visualising tool that comprises a miniature high-resolution camera attached at the front tip along with a high-intensity light source on a thin tube. When inserted inside the body, the light source enlightens the focused area, and the camera transmits a live video feed of that area to an external monitor.

With our highly advanced German endoscopes, our endoscopic surgeon in  Mumbai, can perform minimally invasive procedures that require incisions of not more than 8 mm.

Instrument:

Highly advanced instruments can be passed through these endoscopes to achieve decompression and endoscopic disc removal. The entire procedure can be recorded and seen by the patient later. The procedure is seen on a massive 4K screen for better visualisation.

Endoscopic Spine Surgeries:

There are different spinal surgeries performed to treat individual sections of the spine and various problems with a suitable solution. The essential surgeries performed by our endoscopic surgeon in  Mumbai include:

Endoscopic Lumbar Laminotomy:

Laminotomy procedure is performed to release any compressive pressure in the spinal canal that is causing severe pain, numbness and weakness in the back. This condition is most commonly caused due to spinal stenosis, bulging disc, bone spurs or overgrown joints.

For this procedure, our surgeon makes small incisions around the Lumbar region of the spine where the pressure is being exerted.

Working channel and endoscope are introduced through these incisions, and the lumbar vertebrae are treated. The endoscope is called S-Gun – a highly advanced and state of the art piece developed by MaxMore Spine in Germany.

The rear-wall portion of the vertebrae is known as the lamina. The offending portion is surgically removed. This also releases the compressive pressure on the entire spine and nerves. Also, the adjacent supporting ligaments of the spine may be removed if they are contributing to the pressure.

Endoscopic Discectomy:

This procedure is performed to relieve pain and discomfort by removing the herniated parts of spinal discs that are pressing on the nerve roots. The parts that are most affected by this disc herniation include the neck, arms, mid-back, lower back and the legs.

It can be performed over any region of the spine where a disc has herniated and is damaging the spinal cord. It is the least invasive endoscopic surgery of all spine surgeries and is often performed under local anaesthesia. First, our surgeon makes a small incision over the herniated disc. Using thin surgical tools, either the herniated parts or the entire disc is removed.

Vertebroplasty:

In case the spine problems are due to a fracture caused by a compression force or weakness, then our spine specialist in Bandra reinforces the spine with vertebroplasty. It is commonly caused due to osteoporosis.

Here, our surgeon injects glue-like bone cement into the fractured region. As this cement solidifies, the fractured vertebra solidifies and provides strength and stability to the entire spine.

Benefits of Endoscopic Spine Surgery:

According to our endoscopic surgeon in  Mumbai, following are the benefits of having endoscopic spine surgery:

  • Since the incisions are small, they take less time to heal and are less painful than open surgery.
  • The adjacent muscles and soft tissues of the treated area are preserved.
  • There is minimal blood loss during an endoscopic treatment.
  • The chance of post-operative infections is reduced drastically.
  • It is performed as outpatient surgery and hence, enables the patient to resume their routine in a few days.
